Why small firms fall apart

Here are five reasons why many
small firms don’t survive...

  • Many small firms do not have a plan for building a winning team
  • For a business to succeed it must have a plan of action for what the team is to do and how the team should do it.

  • No one to inspire the team
  • If the team has no leader, it’s like a ship without a captain.

Every team needs a leader who will share experiences with the team and be a suitable role model for team members to follow.

  • Poor communication
  • Where communication has broken down, people can only guess as to what the boss wants and what is expected of them.

Team members are not mind readers, therefore, unless there is a system of effective communication, people will often send and receive the wrong messages to and from each other.

This results in a massive waste of time and resources and the business suffers.

  • Lack of trust
  • Lack of trust can be seen in business team members where they have low levels of self confidence as they don’t trust the system to give them a satisfactory work environment.

Employees are not sure if they are allowed to do certain things at work and there is a general air of uncertainty about the place.

  • Unhealthy business culture

A sick business culture is comprised of emotionally drained people who are sick of work and everything connected to the business.

The business environment is characterized by a lack of co-operation, cold unfriendly workers, and most people feeling flat.

The whole enterprise is sagging and falling into the gutter. All of these reasons add up to a disaster happening…right now.

Notice that the above issues are not related to finances, customers or suppliers. Yes, these are very real factors, however they are generally external issues. Team building involving leadership, communication, trust, teaching, and business culture are all internal issues that can be fixed.

Focus on the inside, the internal motor of your business, which is your team. Look to your team to build a strong internal base which is able to deal with the external or “out there” aspects of your business.

For example... when customers visit your small firm imagine how good they will feel when they are welcomed by your friendly and helpful team members. When your financier comes to visit your office and they are greeted with enthusiasm and professionalism. It helps you and your small firm.

Build your team with a solid foundation, build with honesty and integrity and build layer by layer. Soon you will enjoy the benefits of an effective team and the business will operate as if by itself... without you... almost!
