• Honesty

Always be honest. Tell the truth and keep on telling the truth.

• Focus on team goals

Know what game you are playing, stick to the game plan and achieve goals through a team effort.

Stay focused and don’t wander off onto side tracks, even though other areas may interest you. Stay upright, stay on track and gain the lead.

• Reliable

It is essential for a leader to be reliable.

When you say you will do something, you must do your level best to do it. If you are unable to achieve a task, tell the team about ‘Plan B’. Always lead by example.

• Decision maker

It is sometimes very difficult to make decisions especially where the outcomes of your decision will impact upon the progress of your team. Nonetheless, decisions must be made and life goes on.

Effective decision making comes from careful consideration of the problem and surrounding issues. Do your research and find the relevant information. Make your decision then implement your solution. Follow through and gather feedback, then if need be fine tune your tactics for solving the problem as you go along.

• Create realistic expectations

Live and work in the ‘real world’.

Carefully construct your plan so that your team has a good chance of achieving their goals

Don’t make your expectations too easy or low, nor design goals which no one can ever achieve.

Divide your objectives into achievable milestones and celebrate with your team when they reach their milestones.

Remember: Leadership training is about developing leadership skills and abilities. Your team environment will provide lots of clues as to how well you are leading your team. Look for the clues!
