Leadership development for small business
Team leadership development
Here are some useful tips for your leadership development.
• Sharing information and experiences
Most communities have stories that people tell and re-tell to each other and successive generations of the group.
A small business team is no different. It needs to have an oral, written and pictorial history that is full of stories of events both interesting and uplifting.
You as leader can make a start by sharing your own stories with the team. Include your experiences that are related to the business or connected in some way to your team’s activities. Relay the experiences that you learnt the most from, even the embarrassing ones!
Invite your team to share their life stories with you and each other. The same goes for business information. Share it around. It is like water to a thirsty flower. Let your team bloom now...don’t wait until Spring.
• Sets standards of behavior for your team
Good leaders let their team know of the standards expected of them.
Be reasonable with your standards and set your business standards at a level that requires some effort to achieve them…not too high…not too low.
• Allow yourself to show emotion
You are human and humans have emotions. Its okay to let other people see how you feel.
It shows that you have feelings too!
• Understand how others perceive you
Example of differing perceptions.
You may think that others see you as sociable and a good listener and that you like dealing with the facts. However, your team members may hold the perception that you are moody and hard to please.
Who is correct?
Both you and your team are entitled to their perceptions, held at a particular time.
Perceptions can change if you let other people into your ‘inner world’ and allow other people to see the real you.
Keep working on your leadership development.
